Radiation Therapy in Ocular Tumors
In recent years, radiation therapy has become a cornerstone in the treatment of ocular tumors, driven by notable advances in both technology and clinical research. This treatment method has had a surge in use, reflecting renewed interest in refining therapeutic strategies for conditions such as uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma, conjunctival tumors, and orbital lymphomas. These tumors present unique challenges in terms of local control and preservation of vision, underscoring the need for precise and effective treatment modalities.Modern techniques, including plaque brachytherapy, proton beam therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and advanced external beam modalities, now enable highly targeted treatment while minimizing toxicity to delicate ocular structures. Recent studies have expanded our understanding of optimal dose planning, radiobiological principles, toxicity mitigation, and long-term outcomes. Additional emerging themes include combination therapies, real-world data analyses, and molecular predictors guiding personalized care. This Research Topic aims to gather and highlight the latest research, clinical insights, and expert perspectives that continue to shape the evolving field of radiation therapy for ocular tumors. We welcome submissions that address:• Current practices and novel techniques in ocular radiation therapy, including proton therapy, brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery.• Advances in dose calculation, imaging guidance, and treatment planning that improve precision and minimize morbidity.• Clinical outcomes and comparative effectiveness across tumor types (uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma, conjunctival tumors, orbital lymphomas, and metastatic lesions).• Studies on acute and late toxicity, quality of life, and visual function preservation.• Integration of radiation therapy with systemic or targeted agents.• Biomarkers, genetics, and personalized approaches to treatment.• Case reports detailing unusual tumor presentations, management dilemmas, or technical innovations.By bringing together cutting-edge studies and multidisciplinary expertise, this collection seeks to foster new insights, highlight best practices, and set the foundation for future advances in the use of radiation therapy for ocular tumors. Please note: manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics, computational analysis, or predictions of public databases which are not accompanied by validation (independent clinical or patient cohort, or biological validation in vitro or in vivo, which are not based on public databases) are not suitable for publication in this journal.
