Real-World Data in Precision Nutrition: Adolescents and Adults
Precision nutrition is an emerging field that seeks to tailor dietary recommendations and interventions according to individual differences in genetics, metabolism, lifestyle, and environmental exposures. Recent advances in high-throughput technologies (-omics) and digital health have made it possible to collect and analyze large volumes of real-world data (RWD), including self-reported dietary intake, biomarker assessments, wearable device outputs, and electronic health records. While there is growing recognition that one-size-fits-all approaches are should no longer apply, significant gaps remain in translating precision nutrition research from controlled settings into practical, scalable solutions. Ongoing debates and major studies, such as those examining gene-diet interactions, chrononutrition, and the integration of nutrigenetic evidence into dietary guidance, highlight both the promise and complexity of precision nutrition. Despite progress, further investigation is needed to ensure the robustness, reliability, and relevance of RWD for informing dietary choices and interventions, particularly across diverse adolescent and adult populations. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding and application of real-world data in precision nutrition for adolescents and adults. The main objectives are to explore how various forms of RWD can be leveraged to uncover inter-individual and intra-individual dietary response variability, guide personalized dietary advice, and support implementation in everyday life. Questions to be addressed include which types of real-world evidence are most predictive of health outcomes, how chrononutrition and genetic factors intersect with routine dietary practices, and what methodological innovations are required to validate and enhance the impact of personalized nutrition strategies. By synthesizing research across nutrigenetics, chrononutrition, behavioral interventions, and pragmatic trial design in humans, this topic seeks to fill knowledge gaps between mechanistic insights and pragmatic application. This Research Topic encompasses research conducted in real-world environments using observational studies, pragmatic trials, digital health interventions, and population-based analyses, with a focus on adolescents and adults. Studies using only highly controlled or artificial conditions without real-world applicability will fall outside the scope. To gather further insights in this area, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Inter-individual variability in dietary response and health outcomeso Gene–diet and gene–environment interactions within real-world contextso Chrononutrition and circadian influences in everyday dietary patternso Implementation of digital health tools, wearables, and novel data streams in precision nutritiono Real-world interventions in Mediterranean, ketogenic, and other dietary patternso Methodological advancements for collecting, validating, and analyzing RWD in nutrition researcho Barriers, facilitators, and ethical considerations in applying personalized nutrition interventionsWe welcome original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, clinical trials, methodological papers, brief reports, and opinion pieces relevant to the above themes. The concept for this Research Topic emerged from discussions held after the Deep Dive webinar dedicated to the Frontiers in Science lead article, Hybrid alternative protein-based foods: designing a healthier and more sustainable food supply.
