Recent Advancements in Petrology, 2026
Petrology, the study of the origin, composition, transformation and evolution of rocks, forms a cornerstone of Earth sciences by providing critical insights into geodynamic processes and planetary evolution. Over recent years, rapid progress in analytical techniques, experimental petrology, and computational modelling has revolutionized our understanding of petrological processes at various scales. Despite these advances, significant questions remain unresolved, such as the precise mechanisms driving magmatic differentiation, the impact of crust-mantle interactions, and the role of fluids in rock evolution and transformations. Recent research, leveraging innovations like high-resolution geochemical analyses and in situ isotopic measurements, has revealed new complexities in petrogenetic processes, mantle dynamics, and crustal evolution. However, integrating this growing body of data to reconstruct holistic models of Earth’s interior remains a pressing challenge.State-of-the-art studies have expanded our capability to characterize mineral assemblages, decode the thermal and tectonic history of rocks, and simulate extreme pressure-temperature conditions. Emerging topics such as deep carbon cycles, the dynamics of subduction zones, and the influence of volatiles on magmatic systems have garnered increasing attention. Nevertheless, limitations persist in connecting microscale processes with regional and global geological phenomena, and in translating petrological findings into broader Earth system models. Addressing these issues requires interdisciplinary collaboration and the adoption of novel approaches that fuse fieldwork, laboratory experimentation, and advanced computational methods. This Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge research, methodological breakthroughs, and forward-looking perspectives that advance the field of petrology. By inviting contributions from across the discipline, we seek to showcase transformative findings, foster robust discussion on unresolved questions, and promote novel integrative frameworks. The ultimate goal is to deepen our understanding of the processes that shape the lithosphere and the planet’s geology at large. To gather further insights into contemporary developments and future opportunities in petrology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Innovations in analytical and experimental techniques in petrology• Interactions between magmatic, metamorphic, and sedimentary processes• Geochemical and isotopic tracing of rock formation and evolution• Petrology of the mantle, crust, and emerging planetary bodies• The role of volatiles and fluids in rock transformation• Modelling of pressure-temperature-time-deformation paths• Links between petrological processes and global geodynamic cycles Topic editors: Michel Grégoire Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78632/recent-advancements-in-petrology-2026
