Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Management of Recurrent Brain Tumors: Translating Better Diagnostics to Better Therapeutics
Diagnosing recurrence in patients with brain tumors, particularly following radiotherapy, remains a significant challenge for radiologists and oncologists. Recurrences in eloquent brain regions, overlapping clinical presentations, and similar imaging characteristics of post-treatment sequelae versus recurrent disease, together with limited therapeutic options, further complicate clinical decision-making.In recent years, there have been substantial advances in molecular imaging for the evaluation of recurrent brain tumors. While MRI remains the primary modality for surveillance, imaging with radiolabeled molecules has increasingly supported the accurate diagnosis of recurrent brain lesions and treatment-related changes.Improved understanding of the genetic and molecular alterations underlying brain tumor development and progression has led to mutational analysis becoming integral to the diagnosis and classification of brain tumors, as reflected in the latest WHO Classification. Advances in targeted therapies for other malignancies, such as lung and breast cancer, also provide important insights and optimism for the future management of patients with recurrent brain tumors. This Research Topic aims to bring together and highlight the latest advances in the diagnosis and management of recurrent brain tumors. We welcome original research articles, review articles, and perspective papers. Suggested subthemes include:- Improved roles of conventional imaging modalities- Advances in molecular imaging techniques- Future directions in genetic and molecular analysis- Advances in therapeutic strategies for recurrent diseasePlease note that manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analyses of public genomic or transcriptomic databases, without independent cohort validation or biological validation (in vitro or in vivo), are outside the scope of this Research Topic.
