Recent Advances in Ionic Liquid Membranes for Separation Processes

Ionic liquid membranes (ILMs) have emerged as an increasingly attractive approach for advanced separation technologies due to their unique combination of tunable physicochemical properties, high selectivity, low volatility, and potential for energy-efficient operation. By combining the distinctive physicochemical properties of ionic liquids (IL) with the functional advantages of liquid membrane systems (LMs), these materials offer new opportunities to improve separation efficiency, selectivity, and operational stability. These systems offer significant opportunities for the selective separation of gases, organic compounds, metal ions, pharmaceuticals, and other valuable or hazardous species, while contributing to the broader goals of green chemistry and process sustainability.Recently, significant progress has been made in the design, fabrication, and application of ionic liquid membranes, including supported ionic liquid membranes, polymer inclusion membranes, gel-state ionic liquid membranes, and hybrid or nanocomposite membrane systems. Advances in membrane chemistry, ionic liquid selection, and interface engineering have improved membrane stability, permeability, and selectivity, expanding the practical potential of ILM-based technologies. Simultaneously, significant challenges remain, such as long-term operational stability, ionic liquid loss, membrane fouling, recyclability, scaling feasibility, and industrial application. This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances in ionic liquid membranes for advanced separation processes. It welcomes original research articles, short communications, and review papers that highlight novel separation strategies, advanced developments, novel membrane materials, transport mechanisms, process optimization, and practical applications of ILMs related various materials removal and advanced separation methods.
