Recent Advances in Processing, Microstructure, and Performance of Metallic Alloys
The performance and service life of metallic alloys are governed by the interplay between processing route, resulting microstructure, and in-service behavior-from mechanical strength to corrosion and degradation resistance. Advances across the processing spectrum, including thermomechanical treatment, additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, severe plastic deformation, laser-based surface modification, chemical surface treatments, and computational/data-driven modeling, are expanding the design space for tailoring alloy microstructure and extending component lifetime across structural, biomedical, and energy applications. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Review, and Mini Review articles addressing the processing-microstructure-performance relationship across metallic alloy systems. Rather than centering on any single material class or technique, the aim is to build a collection that reflects current directions across physical metallurgy and surface engineering, inviting contributions from researchers working on any class of metallic alloy.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Processing routes for metallic alloys, including additive manufacturing, thermomechanical treatment, powder metallurgy, and severe plastic deformation• Microstructure–property relationships in Mg, Al, Ti, Ni, Fe-based and high-entropy alloys• Surface treatment and modification techniques, including mechanical and chemical surface treatments, laser-based processing, and protective coatings• Corrosion behavior and protection strategies across structural and biomedical alloy systems• Mechanical property optimization through microstructural control• Computational and data-driven approaches linking processing parameters to microstructure and performance• Emerging applications in biomedical, energy, and lightweight structural systemsBy bringing together processing, microstructural, and performance perspectives across alloy systems, this Research Topic aims to advance the understanding needed to design next-generation metallic materials with improved performance and durability.
