Recent Advances in Understanding the Pathogenesis of Periodontitis and Peri-implantitis

Periodontitis and peri-implantitis are inflammatory oral diseases that affect the supporting structures of teeth and dental implants, respectively. These diseases are multifactorial, involving complex interactions between host immune responses, microbial dysbiosis, and environmental factors. Periodontitis is one of the leading causes of tooth loss worldwide, while peri-implantitis is an increasingly prevalent concern due to the widespread use of dental implants. Despite significant advances in understanding their pathogenesis, the underlying mechanisms still remain the subject of significant research, particularly concerning the interactions between genetic, epigenetic, microbial, and immunological factors. The goal of this research topic is to provide a comprehensive update on our understanding of the pathogenesis of periodontitis and peri-implantitis, which remains a critical challenge in this area of research. Both diseases share similarities in their inflammatory mechanisms but also display distinct differences in their etiology and progression. Understanding these differences is fundamental for developing targeted diagnostic tools and effective treatment strategies. This research topic aims to encourage contributions that explore the molecular, cellular, and microbial mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of both diseases. Topics of interest include but are not limited to, the role of host-microbiome interactions, genetic and epigenetic regulation, systemic influences, and novel biomarkers. This research topic focuses on recent advances in understanding the pathogenesis of periodontitis and peri-implantitis, emphasizing the molecular, cellular, and microbial mechanisms that drive these diseases. Contributions addressing emerging themes such as the host-microbiome interactions, immune-inflammatory responses, epigenetic and genetic regulation, and systemic influences on disease onset and progression are highly encouraged. Studies exploring novel diagnostic biomarkers, therapeutic targets, or innovative approaches to treatment are also within the scope of this issue. We invite a wide range of manuscript types, including original research (clinical, in vivo and in vitro studies) systematic reviews and narrative reviews.
