Redox Nutrigenomics in Aging: Gene–Diet Interactions in Oxidative Stress, Inflammaging, and Immunosenescence
Redox nutrigenomics is an emerging field that examines how dietary components and genetic backgrounds together regulate redox balance, inflammation, and immune function throughout the aging process. In the context of aging, disturbances in redox equilibrium, immune system decline (immunosenescence), and persistent low-grade inflammation (inflammaging) are recognized contributors to increased disease susceptibility and accelerated functional decline. Mounting evidence now highlights not only the crucial roles of nutrients and bioactives in these pathways, but also raises key questions on how genetic diversity in redox-regulating and inflammatory genes shapes individual responses to diet and impacts health trajectories in later life. While studies have identified specific polymorphisms, such as those in SOD2 or VDR, and associated responses to antioxidants or vitamin D, inconsistencies and knowledge gaps remain, particularly regarding the translation of molecular findings to actionable nutrition guidance for older adults. There is an urgent need to understand gene–diet interactions and their influence on the mechanisms underlying oxidative stress and immune dysfunction with age. This Research Topic aims to elucidate the complex interplay between dietary patterns, genetic variants, and redox-sensitive molecular pathways in shaping oxidative and inflammatory processes during aging. In particular, it seeks to identify nutrigenetic and nutrigenomic biomarkers of healthy aging, define mechanistic links between gene-expression profiles and dietary exposures, and advance the development of precision nutrition strategies for the prevention and management of age-related diseases. By addressing these objectives, this collection aspires to foster a transdisciplinary dialogue and to bridge experimental, clinical, and translational perspectives in the field of aging research. To gather further insights in the boundaries of gene–diet interactions, oxidative stress, and immunological aging, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Redox-sensitive gene variants (e.g., SOD2, VDR) and their dietary modulation.• Mechanisms linking micronutrient intake and antioxidant defenses in elderly populations.• Nutrigenomic and nutrigenetic markers predicting inflammatory or immune aging.• Dietary interventions for mitigating oxidative stress and inflammaging.• Clinical trials and translational approaches for personalized nutrition in healthy aging.• Reviews integrating molecular, physiological, and nutritional evidence in the context of aging.• Novel strategies for dietary assessment and individualized care in age-related functional decline. We invite original research articles, mechanistic experiments, clinical investigations, biomarker discovery studies, and comprehensive reviews that advance our understanding of redox nutrigenomics and its role in healthy aging.
