Reducing Energy Consumption in Process Systems: Advances in Reactor and Unit Operation Design, Optimization, and Process Intensification
Improving energy efficiency in process systems is a major challenge in the transition toward more sustainable chemical, electrochemical, and environmental operations. Energy demand in reactors and other unit operations is strongly influenced by process design, hydrodynamics, transport phenomena, operating conditions, and system configuration. Reducing this demand without compromising performance is therefore a key objective in process and energy systems engineering. This Research Topic focuses on advances that improve the design and operation of process systems to reduce power demand and overall energy consumption. It welcomes research on reactor and unit operation design, mixing and flow behavior, process intensification, scale-up, and optimization. Contributions demonstrating clear relevance to energy efficiency, energy management, and reducing power demand in process systems will be given particular emphasis.Goal: The goal of this Research Topic is to gather original research and practical insights that advance the understanding and reduction of energy consumption in process systems. We aim to highlight work that supports more efficient design, operation, and optimization of reactors and related unit operations across chemical, electrochemical, and environmental applications.Scope and information for Authors: We welcome submissions on topics including:• Energy-efficient design and operation of reactors and unit operations, including stirred tanks, chemical, electrochemical, biological and photocatalytic reactors. • Hydrodynamics, mixing, transport phenomena, and scale-up studies with clear relevance to reducing energy consumption• Process intensification and optimization strategies that improve efficiency while maintaining or enhancing process performance• Experimental and modeling studies for chemical, electrochemical, environmental, water treatment, photocalysis, carbon capture, and related process applications with a strong focus on reduced energy demand Topic editors: Sergio A.
