Regenerative Periodontology and Peri-Implant Reconstruction: Materials, Methods, and Meaningful Outcomes
Regenerative periodontology and peri-implant reconstruction represent critical domains within dental research, focusing on the restoration of lost tissues to re-establish function, aesthetics, and long-term oral health. The increasing prevalence of periodontal and peri-implant diseases poses significant challenges for clinicians, patients, and researchers alike, necessitating continual advancement in therapeutic strategies. Currently, the field is characterized by an evolving understanding of biological principles underlying tissue regeneration, coupled with rapid developments in biomaterials, surgical techniques, and adjunctive therapies. Despite notable successes - such as novel scaffold designs, growth factor applications, and improved surgical protocols - uncertainties remain regarding the most effective approaches for predictable and long-lasting clinical outcomes. This is compounded by ongoing debates over optimal treatment modalities, the variable influence of patient-specific factors, and limitations in long-term randomized controlled trials. As such, critical gaps persist in translating experimental advances into widely adopted clinical protocols, and in defining what constitutes meaningful success from both practitioner and patient perspectives. This Research Topic aims to critically evaluate and promote new knowledge on the materials, methods, and outcome measures within regenerative periodontology and peri-implant reconstruction. The objective is to assemble cutting-edge research that elucidates the biological mechanisms of regeneration, benchmarks new biomaterials and technologies, and clarifies which methodologies are most likely to yield both clinically and patient-relevant improvements. The Research Topic also seeks to address central questions surrounding the standardization of success criteria, integration of patient-reported outcome measures, and identification of barriers to clinical translation. Submissions are encouraged to explore and challenge current paradigms, with an emphasis on evidence-based and translational research. To gather further insights in the boundaries of regenerative periodontology and peri-implant reconstruction while limiting the focus to clinically relevant and scientifically robust innovations, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Biological and molecular mechanisms underlying periodontal and peri-implant tissue regeneration• Development, characterization, and clinical evaluation of biomaterials and scaffolds• Comparative assessment of surgical and non-surgical regenerative techniques• Long-term outcomes, prognostic indicators, and patient-centered success measures• Integration of digital dentistry and emerging technologies in regenerative procedures• Personalized and precision medicine approaches to periodontology and implantology• Methodological innovations in clinical trial design and translational research Topic editors: Carlos Fernando Mourao, Paulo Tambasco De Oliveira, Mario Taba Jr Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78226/regenerative-periodontology-and-peri-implant-reconstruction-materials-methods-and-meaningful-outcomes
