Regulatory Ready Nanomedicine: Engineering for Manufacturability and Translation
Nanomedicine offers powerful tools for targeted therapy, imaging, and controlled drug delivery. However, the translation of nanocarriers from laboratory research to clinical products remains slow. Challenges include batch to batch variability, complex manufacturing processes, stability concerns, and evolving regulatory expectations. Engineering approaches that incorporate quality by design, scalable synthesis, and robust characterization are essential for bridging the gap between discovery and clinical application. As interest in nanomedicine grows across academia, industry, and regulatory agencies, there is a critical need for research that supports the development of clinically viable nanocarrier systems. The goal of this Research Topic is to address the translational challenges that limit the clinical adoption of nanomedicine. While many nanocarrier systems demonstrate strong preclinical performance, few progress to regulatory approval due to issues with scale up, reproducibility, stability, and safety. This collection aims to highlight engineering strategies that improve manufacturability, regulatory alignment, and clinical feasibility. By showcasing advances in scalable synthesis, analytical characterization, predictive modeling, and regulatory science, the Research Topic seeks to promote nanomedicine platforms that are designed with translation in mind from the outset. This Research Topic welcomes submissions focused on engineering nanomedicine platforms for clinical translation. Areas of interest include:- Scalable manufacturing- Stability optimization- Analytical characterization- Biocompatibility assessment- Regulatory strategy- Predictive modeling of in vivo performance- Device-assisted delivery- Combination product integration- Quality by design approachesAuthors may submit original research, reviews, methods, or perspectives. Work that demonstrates translational relevance, regulatory awareness, or engineering innovation will be particularly valued.
