Resilience and Psychological Recovery in Times of Stress and Uncertainty: Pathways to Mental Health and Human Flourishing
The field of psychological resilience and adaptation has gained increasing relevance in recent years as individuals and societies face persistent stressors ranging from global crises to personal hardships. Research has illuminated the complex interplay between biological, psychological, and social processes that underpin human responses to adversity. Despite an expanding body of evidence, questions remain about how people rebuild wellbeing after disruption, the mechanisms that sustain recovery, and the factors that distinguish mere survival from genuine flourishing. Emerging studies challenge traditional deficit-oriented frameworks and instead highlight dynamic models of growth, flexibility, and meaning-making. Yet, gaps persist in understanding how contextual, cultural, and temporal factors influence the trajectories of psychological recovery and personal development. This Research Topic aims to deepen understanding of the psychological mechanisms that foster resilience, wellbeing, and sustainable adaptation to stress. It seeks to explore how individuals restore balance and purpose following adversity, how social and environmental contexts shape adaptive responses, and what interventions can cultivate enduring mental health. We encourage contributions that examine these processes through empirical, theoretical, and applied approaches, fostering a more integrated view of human resilience as both a process and an outcome. By investigating positive adaptation at multiple levels — from individual cognition and emotion to social functioning and community engagement — this Research Topic strives to advance holistic perspectives on sustained wellbeing. To gather further insights into psychological recovery and adaptation, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Mechanisms linking stress, coping, and positive adaptation- The role of emotion regulation and cognitive flexibility in recovery- Narrative identity and meaning-making in periods of transition- The influence of interpersonal relationships and social support systems- Cross-cultural and lifespan variations in resilience processes- Interventions that promote sustained mental and emotional wellbeing- Longitudinal and multilevel approaches to studying psychological adaptationWe welcome diverse article types, including original research, systematic reviews, theoretical papers, brief reports, and meta-analyses.
