Resilient Cyber-Physical Smart Grids: Technologies, Strategies, and Future Perspectives
The rapid evolution of modern power systems toward highly interconnected and digitized smart grids has significantly improved operational efficiency, flexibility, and the integration of distributed energy resources. However, this transformation has also introduced new vulnerabilities as physical power infrastructure becomes increasingly coupled with communication, control, and information networks, forming complex cyber-physical energy systems. The growing penetration of renewable energy, widespread deployment of IoT-enabled devices, and reliance on real-time data exchange further expand the attack surface and system complexity. As a result, modern power systems are increasingly exposed to disruptions caused by cyberattacks, natural hazards, and operational faults. Ensuring the resilience of cyber-physical smart grids—defined as the ability to anticipate, withstand, adapt to, and rapidly recover from disturbances while maintaining essential functions—has therefore become a critical research priority for secure and sustainable energy systems.Recent technological advances provide new opportunities to enhance the resilience and reliability of cyber-physical smart grids. Developments in artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twin technologies, advanced sensing, and edge computing enable improved situational awareness, predictive maintenance, and data-driven decision-making in power system operation. At the same time, the increasing sophistication of cyber threats targeting critical energy infrastructure requires proactive strategies for risk assessment, anomaly detection, and coordinated response mechanisms. Addressing these challenges requires interdisciplinary research that combines power system engineering, information technology, cybersecurity, and advanced control methodologies. This Research Topic aims to bring together innovative research that advances the design, analysis, and operation of resilient cyber-physical smart grids. The goal is to explore novel architectures, analytical frameworks, and intelligent control strategies that enhance the reliability, flexibility, and security of modern power systems. Emphasis is placed on integrating emerging digital technologies with practical engineering solutions to support robust, adaptive, and future-ready smart grid infrastructures. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Mini-Reviews, and Perspectives addressing theoretical, methodological, and applied aspects of resilient cyber-physical smart grids.
