Rethinking Communication, Identity, and Society in an Information-Driven Age

Digital media ecosystems are increasingly shaped by interactive computational systems, including AI-driven recommendation engines, generative models, multimodal interfaces, and adaptive content moderation architectures. These technologies do not merely distribute information; they actively structure user experience (UX), influence perception, and mediate cultural participation through algorithmic decision-making and interface design.Within the scope of Human–Media Interaction, this Research Topic focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of interactive media systems that shape how users engage with information in digitally mediated environments. We seek contributions that foreground computational mechanisms, such as personalization models, explainable AI techniques, trust modeling, and multimodal interaction frameworks, and examine their impact on usability, transparency, and user trust.Particular attention is given to how interaction design and algorithmic transparency influence user understanding, agency, and engagement. As intelligent systems increasingly curate and generate media content, there is a growing need for rigorous UX evaluation, human-centered system design, and empirical research into user perception and behavioral outcomes. We welcome interdisciplinary contributions grounded in computational and experimental methods, including system prototypes, usability studies, controlled experiments, modeling approaches, and human-subject research that advance understanding of user interaction with intelligent media technologies.Themes of Interest• UX design and evaluation in AI-mediated media platforms• Explainable AI and algorithmic transparency in interactive systems• Trust modeling and user perception of personalization algorithms• Multimodal and immersive media interaction (AR/VR/XR, voice, visual systems)• Interaction design for generative AI and conversational agents• Human-in-the-loop approaches to content moderation and algorithm governance• Cognitive and behavioral evaluation of digital media interfaces• Interface strategies to mitigate misinformation and bias Topic editors: Deniz Çupi, Ajrina Hysaj, Elda Cina Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77974/rethinking-communication-identity-and-society-in-an-information-driven-age
