Reviews in Agroecological Cropping Systems

Frontiers in Agronomy is delighted to present the ‘Reviews in’ series of Research Topics. ‘Reviews in’ is a series being launched across Frontiers in Agronomy’s sections which aims to publish high-quality review articles on key topics within the field. The goal of this series is to highlight recent advances across agronomic disciplines, whilst emphasising important directions and new possibilities for future inquiry. We anticipate the research presented will promote discussion within the broader agronomy community and translate to best practice applications in research, industry, and policy settings. The Agroecological Cropping Systems section covers the design, assessment, and management of farming and cropping systems that connect ecology and agriculture to promote sustainable production. As global agriculture confronts biodiversity loss, declining soil health, climate change, and the urgent need to reduce reliance on synthetic inputs, the demand for rigorous, synthesised knowledge on agroecological approaches has never been greater. Reviews in Agroecological Cropping Systems brings together high-quality scholarly review articles that map the current state of the science, identify critical knowledge gaps, and chart directions for the development of resilient, diversified, and ecologically sound cropping systems. The Reviews in Agroecological Cropping Systems collection welcomes Review, Mini-Review, and Systematic Review articles on topics within the scope of the Agroecological Cropping Systems section. Topics considered in scope include, but are not limited to:• Agroecological practices for resource efficiency and productivity• Agroforestry systems• Biodiversity preservation in cropping systems• Climate change impacts on cropping systems and agroecological solutions• Cover crops and their benefits• Crop diversification in time and space• Cropping system models for rotations and crop successions• Cropping systems for sustainable management of crops, soils, and livestock• Ecological intensification of agriculture through technology-based solutions• Innovative and sustainable cropping system design and management• Low input cropping systems for sustainable production• Low pesticide use and pesticide-free agriculture• Multicriteria assessment of cropping and farming systems for sustainable agriculture• Natural-based solutions for agricultural production enhancement• Nutrient and water use efficiency and management• Opportunities and weaknesses of diverse agroecological systems• Optimizing diversity of species in cropping systems• Sustainable food systems based on agroecological principles• Trees in cropping systems.New articles will be visible in the collection as they are accepted for publication.
