Reviews in Cellular Neurophysiology 2026

Cellular neurophysiology is a cornerstone of understanding nervous system function, encompassing detailed studies of how neurons and glial cells interact and communicate. At the heart of this field is neurotransmission, which involves complex presynaptic and postsynaptic processes, as well as non-synaptic mechanisms. These processes not only drive normal physiological functions but also contribute to various pathological states. By dissecting the intricacies of neurotransmission and related cellular activities, we can gain critical insights into both health and disease. The goal of this Research Topic is to compile comprehensive reviews that deepen our understanding of cellular neurophysiology. We aim to cover the broad spectrum of cellular activities and interactions that underpin nervous system function. By focusing on reviews, we seek to present the latest consolidated knowledge and highlight gaps where further research is needed. This collection will address key mechanisms of neurotransmission, the roles of different cell types in neural communication, and the modulation of these processes under physiological and pathological conditions. This Research Topic invites review articles that explore various facets of cellular neurophysiology, including but not limited to:• Mechanisms of neurotransmission, including synthesis, release, and receptor interactions.• Roles of neurons and glial cells in neural communication and neurovascular coupling.• Ion channel functions and their implications for neuronal activity.• Dendritic and somatic integration of synaptic signals.• Modulation of synaptic transmission and plasticity.• Non-synaptic communication and neuromodulation.• Cellular mechanisms underlying synapse formation, remodeling, and pruning.• Neurophysiological markers and their relevance in neurodegenerative diseases.• Computational modeling of neural circuits and cellular interactions.• Advances in techniques such as optogenetics and chemogenetics for studying neural circuits.• Cellular and molecular underpinnings of neuroactive drug actions.• Cellular Neurosignal Markers for Neurodegenerative DisordersWe are particularly interested in review articles that provide critical syntheses of current knowledge, identify emerging trends, and propose future research directions. Contributions that offer novel insights into the cellular mechanisms of neurophysiological processes and their implications for disease are highly encouraged. The 2025 Edition of this Research Topic can be found here: • Reviews in Cellular Neurophysiology 2025 Topic editors: Luca Raiteri, Aditya Singh, Giusi Manassero, Giuseppe Scalabrino Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81397/reviews-in-cellular-neurophysiology-2026
