Reviews in Environmental Water Quality

Frontiers in Water is pleased to launch “Reviews in Environmental Water Quality,” part of a wider series of section-specific review collections dedicated to publishing high-quality scholarly reviews across the journal.Advances in monitoring and modeling are transforming our understanding of the processes that control water quality. High-resolution autonomous sensors, novel isotopic and microbiological tracers, and increasingly sophisticated reactive transport and fate models are revealing the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms driving water quality change across groundwater, surface water, and the systems that connect them. This progress has outpaced our ability to synthesize it: mechanisms validated in one system are often assumed to generalize to others, models rarely get checked against the natural attenuation processes they are meant to represent, and new high-resolution data streams are reshaping what counts as a reliable signal versus noise.This Research Topic invites review-type articles that critically synthesize and challenge current understanding of the processes controlling water quality, rather than simply cataloguing recent findings. We welcome reviews that identify emerging consensus, expose contradictions across studies or systems, and chart where the field’s next advances are likely to come from. Themes of interest include, but are not limited to:- Cause-effect relationships in water quality dynamics and management;- Environmental fate and reactive transport modeling;- Groundwater–surface water interactions;- High-resolution sensing and autonomous monitoring networks;- Innovative data integration and interpretation methods;- Natural attenuation processes and contaminant behavior;- Isotopic and microbiological tracers of water quality processes;- Drivers of spatiotemporal variability in water quality.This Research Topic welcomes review-type papers, including Systematic Reviews, Policy and Practice Reviews, Mini Reviews, and Reviews.
