Reviews in Food Packaging and Preservation
Food packaging and preservation technologies are central to reducing food loss and waste, extending shelf life, ensuring food safety, and meeting growing consumer and regulatory demand for sustainable materials. Advances in active and intelligent packaging, biodegradable and edible films, antimicrobial coatings, modified atmosphere and controlled-release systems, and non-thermal preservation methods are reshaping how food quality and safety are maintained from production to consumption. This Research Topic invites Reviews that synthesize current knowledge, critically evaluate emerging technologies, and identify open challenges and future directions across food packaging and preservation science. Topics of interest span (but are not limited to):- Biodegradable, bio-based, and edible packaging materials- Active and intelligent packaging systems (antimicrobial, antioxidant, sensor-based)- Nanotechnology applications in food packaging and preservation- Novel and non-thermal preservation technologies (high pressure, cold plasma, pulsed electric fields)- Shelf-life extension strategies and food quality monitoring- Sustainability, circularity, and regulatory considerations in packaging design- Consumer acceptance and market trends in sustainable food packagingBy bringing together comprehensive reviews from across this field, this Research Topic aims to provide researchers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers with a consolidated, forward-looking resource on the state of the art in food packaging and preservation. We welcome Review, Mini Review, and Systematic Review articles (including meta-analyses and scoping reviews) for this Research Topic.
