Reviews in Imaging: 2026

Image science encompasses the acquisition, processing, retrieval, analysis, security and application of images and video across health, science, engineering, culture and society. This Research Topic will provide a comprehensive 2026 review of advances across the imaging landscape, including novel sensors, computational imaging, artificial intelligence, computer vision and multimedia technologies. These developments are expanding the capabilities of imaging systems while creating challenges related to data quality, generalisability, interpretability, reliability, privacy, security and responsible use. Current research spans image and video understanding, retrieval and recognition, secure and privacy-preserving imaging, and applications in clinical imaging, astronomy, remote sensing, robotics, automated driving, cultural heritage and surveillance. However, knowledge remains distributed across technical and application-oriented fields, with persistent gaps in reproducibility, benchmarking, explainability, uncertainty quantification and the translation of imaging research into robust real-world solutions. This Research Topic aims to consolidate and critically assess recent advances in image and video technologies, connecting fundamental methods with emerging developments and domain-specific implementation. It will examine the opportunities, limitations and wider implications of modern imaging, while highlighting methodological standards, reproducibility, responsible data use, privacy, ethical governance and the development of reliable, explainable, robust and transferable imaging solutions. Contributions should place image or video technology at the centre of the review and clearly identify current challenges, research gaps and priorities for future work.To provide a comprehensive review of the methods, applications and responsible development of image and video technologies, we welcome Review, Mini Review and Systematic Review articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Image and video acquisition, sensing and computational imaging Computational photography, novel imaging and emerging sensors Image processing, denoising, restoration, enhancement and reconstruction Image segmentation, object detection, tracking, recognition and classification Image retrieval, representation, indexing and multimodal analysis Video analysis, understanding, generation and editing Image/video compression, quality assessment and multimedia systems Computer vision and artificial intelligence for imaging Deep learning, foundation models and generative approaches in imaging Generative imaging, neural rendering and 3D/4D generative models Computer graphics, rendering, inverse rendering and image synthesis Geometric modeling, 3D reconstruction and geometric processing Computer animation, motion synthesis and simulation 3D vision, spatial computing, mixed reality and immersive imaging Scientific visualization, information visualization and visual analytics Human–computer interaction, visual perception and perceptual computing Medical and clinical imaging applications Astronomy, space science and scientific imaging Remote sensing, Earth observation and environmental monitoring Automated driving, intelligent transportation and robotics Cultural heritage, digital humanities and art conservation Biometrics and identity-related imaging Multimedia forensics, image authentication, provenance analysis and data integrity Data hiding, steganography, encryption and privacy-preserving imaging Document image analysis and intelligent document processing Virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality and immersive imaging Gaming and interactive media technologies Sports imaging and performance analysis Imaging for surveillance and public safety Imaging datasets, benchmarks, reproducibility and responsible data use Explainability, uncertainty quantification, robustness and generalisability in imaging systems Ethical, societal, legal and regulatory considerations in image and video technologiesThis Research Topic welcomes Review, Mini Review and Systematic Review articles.
