Reviews in Ion Channels from TBI to Epilepsy: Unveiling Therapeutic Frontiers

The field of neurotrauma and epilepsy research has increasingly highlighted the pivotal influence of ion channels in the transition from traumatic brain injury (TBI) to the development of epilepsy, known as post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). Alterations in the function and/or expression of sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride channels have been implicated in the pathophysiological cascade that follows TBI, promoting neuronal hyperexcitability and seizure susceptibility. Despite growing awareness of these mechanisms, comprehensive syntheses that bridge molecular, cellular, and translational insights into these channels remain limited. A focused exploration of their distinct and intersecting contributions promises to advance our understanding of PTE development and may help create a first-ever pharmacological treatment. This Research Topic aims to bring together expert-driven reviews that elucidate the specific roles of sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride channels in the development of TBI-induced epilepsy. Emphasis will be placed on the mechanisms by which dysfunction or modulation of these channels influences neuronal networks, as well as on how targeting these molecules could open new avenues for antiepileptogenic interventions. By providing a platform for critical and integrative perspectives, this collection seeks to clarify current knowledge, highlight methodological advances, and chart opportunities for drug development to minimize PTE risk and severity following TBI.This Research Topic focuses on state-of-the-art reviews authored by leading experts on the involvement and therapeutic potential of four major ion channel classes in post-traumatic epilepsy. We specifically welcome reviews on:• Sodium channels and their modulation in TBI and epileptogenesis• Potassium channel dynamics and neuroprotection post-TBI• Calcium channel signaling and seizure vulnerability• Chloride channels in neuroinhibitory regulation after TBI• Translational perspectives on targeting ion channels in PTE treatment and preventionThe Reviews in Ion Channels from TBI to Epilepsy collection welcomes full-length, mini or systematic review papers. New articles will be added to this collection as they are published.
