Reviews in Soil Biogeochemistry & Nutrient Cycling

Frontiers in Soil Science is delighted to present the 'Reviews in' series of Research Topics. 'Reviews in' is a series being launched across Frontiers in Soil Science's sections which aims to publish high-quality review articles on key topics within the field. The goal of this series is to highlight recent advances across soil science disciplines, whilst emphasising important directions and new possibilities for future inquiry. We anticipate the research presented will promote discussion within the broader soil science community and translate to best practice applications in research, industry, and policy settings. The Soil Biogeochemistry & Nutrient Cycling section covers the nature and dynamics of carbon, nutrients, and contaminants in soil-plant systems — encompassing elemental cycling, greenhouse gas fluxes, mineral weathering, and the biogeochemical controls that regulate soil fertility and environmental quality. As global pressures on nutrient resources intensify and the role of soils in the global carbon cycle comes under ever-greater scrutiny, the demand for synthesised, mechanistic understanding of soil biogeochemical processes has never been stronger. Reviews in Soil Biogeochemistry & Nutrient Cycling brings together high-quality scholarly review articles that map the current state of the science, identify critical knowledge gaps, and provide forward-looking perspectives for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. The Reviews in Soil Biogeochemistry & Nutrient Cycling collection welcomes Review, Mini-Review, and Systematic Review articles on topics within the scope of the Soil Biogeochemistry & Nutrient Cycling section, including but not limited to:• Carbon biogeochemistry and soil carbon dynamics• Nitrogen cycling, transformation, and losses• Phosphorus availability, mobilisation, and retention• Potassium and micronutrient biogeochemistry• Greenhouse gas production and consumption in soils (N₂O, CH₄, CO₂)• Fate and transport of contaminants in soil-plant systems• Soil enzyme activities and biochemical indicators• Stable isotope approaches in nutrient cycling research• Biogeochemical modelling across scales• Coupling of elemental cycles and emerging nutrient interactionsNew articles will be visible in the collection as they are accepted for publication.
