Reviews in Soil Biology, Ecosystems and Biodiversity
Frontiers in Soil Science is delighted to present the 'Reviews in' series of Research Topics. 'Reviews in' is a series being launched across Frontiers in Soil Science's sections which aims to publish high-quality review articles on key topics within the field. The goal of this series is to highlight recent advances across soil science disciplines, whilst emphasising important directions and new possibilities for future inquiry. We anticipate the research presented will promote discussion within the broader soil science community and translate to best practice applications in research, industry, and policy settings. The Soil Biology, Ecosystems and Biodiversity section covers the living component of soil, from microbial communities and soil fauna to the food webs and ecosystem services they sustain, with a particular emphasis on how soil biota regulate key soil functions and contribute to biodiversity conservation. Soil hosts the most biodiverse ecosystem on Earth, yet the structure and dynamics of soil biological communities remain poorly understood relative to aboveground systems. Reviews in Soil Biology, Ecosystems and Biodiversity brings together high-quality scholarly review articles that synthesise knowledge on soil ecological processes, highlight advances in multi-omics and bioinformatics, and identify priority areas for soil biodiversity research and its application in ecosystem management. The Reviews in Soil Biology, Ecosystems and Biodiversity collection welcomes Review, Mini-Review, and Systematic Review articles on topics within the scope of the Soil Biology, Ecosystems and Biodiversity section, including but not limited to:• Soil microbial community structure, diversity, and function• Soil fauna and mesofauna ecology• Soil food web dynamics and trophic interactions• Ecosystem services provided by soil biota• Soil metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and multi-omics approaches• Microbiome engineering and synthetic ecology• Soil ecological resilience, restoration, and disturbance• Links between above- and belowground biodiversity• Soil-borne pathogens and biocontrol• Global change effects on soil biological communitiesNew articles will be visible in the collection as they are accepted for publication.
