Reviews in Soil Organic Matter Dynamics and Carbon Sequestration
Frontiers in Soil Science is delighted to present the 'Reviews in' series of Research Topics. 'Reviews in' is a series being launched across Frontiers in Soil Science's sections which aims to publish high-quality review articles on key topics within the field. The goal of this series is to highlight recent advances across soil science disciplines, whilst emphasising important directions and new possibilities for future inquiry. We anticipate the research presented will promote discussion within the broader soil science community and translate to best practice applications in research, industry, and policy settings. The Soil Organic Matter Dynamics and Carbon Sequestration section covers the formation, transformation, stabilisation, and loss of organic matter in soils — including the microbial and mineral controls on these processes and their implications for soil carbon stocks and climate regulation. Soil organic matter lies at the heart of soil fertility, structure, and the global carbon cycle, and its dynamics are central to both climate change mitigation strategies and adaptation of agriculture to a warmer world. Reviews in Soil Organic Matter Dynamics and Carbon Sequestration brings together high-quality scholarly review articles that consolidate mechanistic understanding of SOM processes, evaluate carbon sequestration approaches, and identify research priorities at the intersection of soil science and climate science. The Reviews in Soil Organic Matter Dynamics and Carbon Sequestration collection welcomes Review, Mini-Review, and Systematic Review articles on topics within the scope of the Soil Organic Matter Dynamics and Carbon Sequestration section, including but not limited to:• Soil organic matter formation, stabilisation, and persistence• Decomposition, mineralisation, and priming effects• Microbial controls on SOM turnover and carbon use efficiency• Soil carbon sequestration strategies and their verification• Pyrogenic carbon and biochar: properties and persistence• SOM dynamics in different ecosystems and land uses• Mineral-organic matter associations and protected carbon pools• Modelling SOM dynamics across temporal and spatial scales• Climate change feedbacks on SOM decomposition and carbon losses• Measurement, reporting, and verification of soil carbon stocksNew articles will be visible in the collection as they are accepted for publication.
