Reviews in Soils and Human Health
Frontiers in Soil Science is delighted to present the 'Reviews in' series of Research Topics. 'Reviews in' is a series being launched across Frontiers in Soil Science's sections which aims to publish high-quality review articles on key topics within the field. The goal of this series is to highlight recent advances across soil science disciplines, whilst emphasising important directions and new possibilities for future inquiry. We anticipate the research presented will promote discussion within the broader soil science community and translate to best practice applications in research, industry, and policy settings. The Soils and Human Health section brings together agronomic, biological, physical, and socio-political science to investigate the multiple and often underappreciated links between soil quality and human health, spanning nutritional pathways, soil-transmitted diseases, the microbiome, and the socio-economic dimensions of soil stewardship. Healthy soils underpin nutritious food, safe water, and resilient ecosystems, yet the connections between soil condition and human well-being are rarely communicated across disciplinary boundaries. Reviews in Soils and Human Health brings together high-quality scholarly review articles that synthesise evidence across these disciplines, highlight emerging risks and opportunities, and support evidence-based policies that recognise soil as a determinant of public and planetary health. The Reviews in Soils and Human Health collection welcomes Review, Mini-Review, and Systematic Review articles on topics within the scope of the Soils and Human Health section, including but not limited to:• Soil microbiome contributions to human immune function and health• Soil-transmitted pathogens, parasites, and zoonotic diseases• Soil quality as a determinant of food nutritional value and safety• Mineral deficiencies in soils and their consequences for human nutrition• One Health approaches linking soil, animal, and human health• Urban soils and human wellbeing: exposure pathways and risks• Antimicrobial resistance in soil environments• Agrobiodiversity, dietary diversity, and dietary quality• Socio-political and policy dimensions of soil-human health linkages• Frameworks for integrating soil health into public health policy.New articles will be visible in the collection as they are accepted for publication.
