Reviews, Perspectives, and Commentaries in Bioinformatic and Predictive Virology
Bioinformatic and predictive virology is a rapidly advancing interdisciplinary field at the intersection of computational sciences and viral research. The emergence and re-emergence of viral threats have underscored the urgency for robust computational tools capable of decoding viral genomes, understanding host–virus interactions, and predicting epidemic dynamics. In recent times, there has been a surge in high-throughput sequencing technologies, omics datasets, and artificial intelligence-driven methodologies, providing nuanced insights into virus evolution, transmission, and pathogenicity. Inspite of this, persistent challenges remain—such as integrating disparate datasets, developing reliable predictive models, and translating computational findings into actionable public health strategies. Divergent opinions remains regarding the optimal balance between model complexity and interpretability, while gaps in comprehensive reviews and expert perspectives on these critical issues continue to impede cohesive progress. This Research Topic aims to stimulate intellectual discourse and collect state-of-the-art knowledge in bioinformatic and predictive virology by curating high-quality reviews, perspectives, and commentaries. The primary objectives are to provide a platform for thought leaders to critically evaluate emerging tools, methodologies, and paradigms, highlight unresolved questions, and chart future research directions. Authors are encouraged to address pivotal issues such as algorithm transparency, reproducibility, cross-disciplinary integration, and the practical impacts of bioinformatics solutions in virology. By assembling compelling expert narratives, the topic seeks to foster dialogue, bridge gaps in understanding, and accelerate the translation of computational discoveries into tangible viral diagnostics, therapeutics, and surveillance strategies. The scope of this research topic encompasses comprehensive reviews, expert perspectives, and insightful commentary articles that cover established and emerging facets of bioinformatic and predictive virology.
