Reviews, Perspectives, and Commentaries in Fungal Genomics and Evolution

Fungal genomics and evolution is an exciting and fast-moving area of research into the incredible diversity and adaptability of fungi. Advances in genome sequencing and bioinformatics have enabled scientists to investigate how fungi evolve, how they adapt to new environments, and how they interact with other organisms. Recent discoveries have shed light on topics such as how genome structure changes over time, the emergence of new functions like pathogenicity or mutualism, and the ways in which fungi acquire genes from other organisms through horizontal gene transfer. These breakthroughs are providing a better understanding of how fungal lineages diversify and thrive in different ecological settings. However, there are still many unanswered questions:  What drives the evolution of genome complexity and multicellularity in fungi? How genomic changes ultimately influence fungal biology in nature? This Research Topic invites comprehensive reviews, expert perspectives, and thoughtful commentaries that summarize recent progress and look ahead to future challenges in fungal genomics and evolution. We encourage contributors to highlight scientific advances, identify knowledge gaps, and discuss current debates within the field. The overall aim is to unite research across molecular, evolutionary, and ecological levels to build a more complete understanding of fungal life. The scope of this Research Topic covers both fundamental and applied aspects of fungal genomics and evolution, with a focus on review-type articles. To advance research and spark discussion, we welcome submissions on, but not limited to, the following themes: Comparative genomics and population genetics in fungal species. Genome structure, organization, and the evolution of genome plasticity. Mechanisms and consequences of horizontal gene transfer. Origins and diversification of fungal pathogenicity, mutualism, and multicellularity. Phylogenomics and evolutionary relationships among fungi. Ecological implications of genomic variation and adaptation. Innovations in sequencing technology and genomic analysis methods.  This Research Topic welcomes Reviews, Perspective, and Commentary articles focused on any fungal lineage and any application of genomics to understand fungal biology, including diversity, evolution, ecology, pathogenesis, symbiosis, and other interactions. This Research Topic also welcomes discussion of how fungal genomics can support broader societal goals, including contributions relevant to SDG 15: Life on Land.
