Reviews, Perspectives, and Commentaries in Medical Mycology
Medical mycology represents a critical and rapidly evolving domain at the intersection of clinical medicine and fungal biology. Fungi responsible for human diseases present a diverse array of pathologies, and their ability to infect and persist in the host has profound impacts on morbidity, mortality, and global public health. Over recent decades, the field has benefited from advances in diagnostics, antifungal therapies, genomics, and systems biology; however, significant clinical, epidemiological, and biological challenges remain; especially against the backdrop of rising drug resistance, emerging fungal pathogens, and immunocompromised patient populations. In addition, the role of the human mycobiome, environmental influences on fungal disease emergence, and host-pathogen interactions are areas characterized by both opportunity and ongoing debate. Recent research continues to unravel the complexity of medical mycology, tackling subjects such as antifungal resistance mechanisms, novel diagnostic biomarkers, and the interactions between fungi and the immune system. New perspectives have emphasized the importance of comparative genomics, multi-omics approaches, host risk factor stratification, and the ecological dimensions of pathogenic fungi in clinical and environmental contexts. Nevertheless, integration of these insights remains incomplete, and consensus on best practices, clinical standards, and research priorities is still evolving. This Research Topic aims to bring together critical syntheses, authoritative viewpoints, and insightful overviews that assess progress in medical mycology. The objective is to spotlight central findings, ongoing controversies, and to identify pivotal gaps that merit further exploration. Contributions spanning molecular, organismal, clinical, and public health levels are encouraged, particularly those that propose innovative conceptual models and outline future directions for research. To gather further insights, this Research Topic welcomes submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: Mechanisms of fungal pathogenicity and host adaptation. Advances in antifungal resistance and treatment strategies. The role of environmental and clinical mycobiomes. Diagnostic innovations and challenges for invasive and superficial mycoses. Fungal epidemiology and trends in global health. Immunological interactions in fungal infection and disease progression. Genomic, phenotypic, and multi-omics integration for fungal disease management. We invite comprehensive analyses, opinion pieces, and scholarly commentaries that provide clarity, refine conceptual understanding, and establish research priorities for the future of medical mycology.
