Reviews, Perspectives, and Commentaries in Systems Virology
Systems virology is an innovative field that integrates experimental and computational approaches to unravel the complex interactions between viruses and their hosts at multiple biological scales. With the advances in single-cell analysis, viral genomics, and network modeling, more understanding of the dynamic and multifaceted nature of virus-host interplay remains a challenge. There are ongoing debates regarding how best to capture emergent properties of viral infections, interpret large-scale omics data, and bridge the gap between model predictions and biological reality. Notable studies have demonstrated the value of multi-omics integration in mapping viral replication strategies and immune responses, while computational frameworks have advanced our understanding of viral evolution and epidemiology. However, there is an urgent need for comprehensive, critical analyses and forward-thinking perspectives to synthesize diverse findings, address methodological limitations, and chart new theoretical and technological horizons for the field. This Research Topic aims to provide a platform for in-depth reviews, authoritative perspectives, and insightful commentaries that evaluate the current landscape of systems virology. By gathering contributions from experts across disciplines, this collection seeks to highlight the most transformative advances, critically examine existing frameworks, and propose novel hypotheses and directions. The objective is to foster scholarly dialogue that identifies emerging trends, addresses gaps in knowledge, and articulates the future challenges and opportunities facing systems virology research. This Research Topic welcomes contributions that critically explore or synthesize aspects of systems virology, with a focus on broad integrative analysis and conceptual advancement. The collection is limited to insightful reviews, perspectives, and commentary pieces, rather than original research articles. We welcome submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Systems-level analysis of virus-host interactionso Computational and modeling approaches in systems virologyo Integration of multi-omics data for virologyo Advances in single-cell virology and viral heterogeneityo Systems immunology in the context of viral infectionso Virus evolution and population dynamics from a systems perspectiveo Translational and clinical implications of systems virology findingso Novel concepts, challenges, and future directions in systems virologyArticle types suitable for this Research Topic include reviews, perspectives, commentaries, policy briefs, opinion pieces, and mini reviews related to emerging and reemerging viruses.
