Reviews, Perspectives, and Commentaries in Viral Diversification and Evolution
Viral diversification and evolution is a pivotal area in virology that explores how viruses adapt, emerge, and persist across diverse hosts and environments. Rapid mutation rates, recombination events, and gene gain or loss shape viral genomes and influence pathogenicity, transmissibility, and immune evasion. Though remarkable progress in genomic surveillance and molecular evolution studies is being made, significant questions remain regarding the mechanisms that drive viral diversity at both micro- and macro-evolutionary scales. Recent studies employing phylogenomics, deep sequencing, and computational modeling have vastly improved our understanding of viral population dynamics and co-evolutionary processes. However, interpreting these findings within ecological, evolutionary, and epidemiological frameworks continues to present major scientific and methodological challenges. This Research Topic aims to gather authoritative Reviews, Perspectives, and Commentaries that synthesize current knowledge and debate unresolved issues in viral diversification and evolution. The goal is to highlight conceptual frameworks and methodological advances that redefine our understanding of viral emergence, adaptation, and evolutionary trajectories. Contributions may address key questions such as: What evolutionary forces most strongly shape viral diversity? How do cross-species transmissions influence virus evolution? And what are the implications of directional selection and host–virus co-adaptation for public health and vaccine strategies? To gather further insights in the broad field of viral evolution and diversification, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Adaptive evolution and molecular mechanisms driving viral diversificationo Phylogenetic and phylodynamic approaches to viral population structureo Viral recombination, reassortment, and horizontal gene transfero Co-evolutionary interactions between viruses and hostso Emergence of novel viral lineages in response to environmental changeo Evolutionary implications of antiviral interventions and vaccine escapeo Conceptual and methodological perspectives in molecular epidemiologyAppendix: We welcome Reviews, Perspectives, and Commentaries for this Research Topic.
