Rewiring Recovery: The Role of Cognitive-Motor Integration in Neurorehabilitation

In rehabilitation medicine, the integration of cognitive and motor functions is essential, especially in neurological and neurodegenerative disorders where central nervous system damage affects both domains. Cognitive-Motor Syndrome (CMS) and Motoric Cognitive Risk (MCR) syndrome highlight this dual impairment, linking disruptions in cognition, movement, and sensory systems. These conditions are associated with structural brain changes, inflammation, and neurotransmitter imbalances, requiring multidisciplinary assessment and intervention.Innovative technologies—such as virtual reality, robotics, and non-invasive brain stimulation—offer promising tools to modulate neural circuits, enhance neuroplasticity, and promote functional recovery. These approaches support the development of dynamic, personalized therapies that simultaneously address cognitive and motor decline. Embracing a cognitive-motor integration model enables a deeper understanding of these complex syndromes and a more effective, holistic approach to rehabilitation. This evolving paradigm shifts the focus from simply restoring lost function to optimizing human potential in the face of neurodegenerative challenges. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in rehabilitation in cognitive-motor integration. Although cognitive and motor functions are fundamentally linked and essential to recovery, cognitive-motor integration remains an underexplored area in rehabilitation, often addressed separately rather than as a unified system. This fragmented approach limits the effectiveness of interventions and hinders optimal functional recovery, particularly in patients with neurological and neurodegenerative disorders, where both cognitive and motor impairments arise from central nervous system (CNS) damage. To bridge this gap, rehabilitation strategies need to emphasize a comprehensive approach that simultaneously targets both cognitive and motor functions. Recent technological advancements offer promising solutions, particularly the use of VR and robotic devices, and non-invasive brain stimulation. Using such tools, we can move toward more effective, evidence-based interventions that support functional independence and improve the quality of life for patients, integrating innovative technologies into rehabilitation protocols. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding and application of cognitive-motor integration in rehabilitation, paving the way for more holistic and effective treatment strategies:• Mechanisms of Cognitive-Motor Integration; • Impact of Cognitive-Motor Dysfunction on Rehabilitation Outcomes; • Innovative Technologies in Rehabilitation; • Neuroplasticity and Cognitive-Motor Training; • Clinical Applications and Case Studies; • Personalized and Adaptive Rehabilitation Strategies; • Challenges and Future Directions.
