RF Coils and Antenna Arrays for Multimodal MRI
Technology of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is continuously evolving, driven by innovations in radiofrequency (RF) coil, antenna and array design. These hardware advances not only enable unprecedented improvements in signal-to-noise ratio, spatial resolution, imaging speed and patient comfort, but also give rise to new contrast mechanisms. This Research Topic brings together cutting-edge developments in coil technology that are pushing the boundaries of MRI and particularly MR-based multimodal applications across clinical and research domains.RF coils are an essential part of any MRI system, serving as the primary interface for transmitting RF pulses and receiving the MR signals. While each MRI system comes equipped with default coils, these are designed for general use and are rarely optimised for novel or specialised purposes and applications. To support such studies, using purpose- or custom-built coils is commonly employed. However, their development presents significant challenges, as each application demands unique specifications while simultaneously requiring careful optimisation of performance and quality of the coil. By highlighting state-of-the-art coil technologies, we aim to advance the collective knowledge of innovative solutions and to achieve meaningful cross-disciplinary collaboration within the community. This Research Topic focuses on a collection of studies addressing recent advances in MRI RF coil and antenna design. We cordially invite researchers to contribute their high-quality original research articles, technical notes, comprehensive reviews or other manuscript types. Topics of particular interest include:-Unified multimodality and hybrid systems: RF coils integrated with PET, tDCS, TMS, FUS, EEG, optical imaging, radiotherapy and/or physiological/system monitoring devices-Wireless and wearable coil technologies: cable- or component-free, flexible, conformable, wearable and wireless designs-Ultra-high field and ultra-low field MRI: novel designs optimised for 7 T and beyond, or emerging portable low-field systems-Multi-frequency and multi-purpose coils Topic editors: Chang-Hoon Choi, Daniel Wenz Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83117/rf-coils-and-antenna-arrays-for-multimodal-mri
