Rising Stars in Mitochondrial Research: Emerging Investigators Shaping the Next Decade
Mitochondrial research is moving quickly, and much of the momentum comes from early-career scientists who are raising new questions and building the innovative tools to answer them. This Research Topic, part of the Frontiers Rising Stars series, showcases the work of rising stars who are shaping the future of the mitochondrial research field. The aim is: To highlight and connect the rising stars of mitochondrial research into a single, visible cohort, give their work the visibility it deserves, and map their impact on where the field is heading over the next decade. We welcome contributions across the whole mitochondrial research community, including but not limited to:1. Bioenergetics, oxidative phosphorylation, the electron transport chain, ATP synthesis and metabolic flexibility.2. Calcium handling and signalling, including the MCU complex, MICU1/2, NCLX, VDAC and local calcium microdomains.3. Membrane contact sites and inter-organelle communication, including mitochondria-ER (MERCS/MAMs), lipid droplets, peroxisomes and lysosomes contacts.4. Mitochondrial dynamics, fusion, fission, mitophagy, biogenesis and quality control.5. Mitochondrial proteostasis, protein import and the mitochondrial unfolded protein response.6. The mitochondrial genome: replication, transcription, heteroplasmy, copy number, nucleoids, mutations, and mobile elements and transposition.7. Mitochondrial inheritance, segregation and the germline bottleneck.8. Mitochondrial evolution, endosymbiosis, and comparative and phylogenetic studies.9. Mitochondrial heterogeneity and functionally distinct subpopulations.10. Mitochondrial trafficking, anchoring and positioning, including Miro-dependent mechanisms.11. Mitochondria in plants, fungi, yeast, protists, invertebrates and other non-model organisms.12. Mitochondria-to-nucleus retrograde and anterograde signalling.13. Mitochondria in innate immunity and inflammation, including mtDNA as a damage signal and cGAS-STING.14. Reactive oxygen species, redox biology, oxidative stress and lipid metabolism.15. The permeability transition pore, apoptosis and mitochondrial cell death.16. Mitochondria in stem cells, development, differentiation and reproduction.17. Mitochondria in ageing and cellular senescence.18. Mitochondria in metabolic, cardiovascular, neurological, musculoskeletal, hepatic and reproductive disease, and in cancer.19. Mitochondrial transplantation, transfer, nanotunnels and biotechnology.20. Emerging methods and tools: high-resolution respirometry, live imaging, biosensors, single-cell and spatial omics, cryo-electron microscopy and computational modelling.21. Environmental, ecological and evolutionary physiology of mitochondria.22. Any other area of mitochondrial research where emerging investigators are making their mark. This collection is also open to normal spontaneous submissions. We nonetheless encourage prospective authors to reach out to the journal team to confirm fit, eligibility and fee support options that may apply in addition to the general Frontiers Fee Support Program.
