Science Education for Global Learning: Promoting Education for Sustainable Development, Transformative Learning and Global Competence

In an increasingly complex and transforming world, education faces the challenge of preparing learners to address global and sustainability-related concerns. Science education plays a central role, as scientific literacy is essential for understanding socio-scientific issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and public health challenges. Embedding science education within global learning connects scientific concepts to societal and environmental challenges. It encourages reflection on how local actions affect global issues, consideration of the long-term impacts of human activities, and awareness of individual and collective roles in promoting sustainability. Education for sustainable development supports this process by integrating sustainability principles into decision-making, while transformative learning fosters critical reflection, perspective-taking, and changes in understanding and behavior. Global competence enables learners to analyze complex problems, consider diverse perspectives, and take informed, responsible action at local, global and intercultural levels. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how science education contributes to global learning by promoting sustainability, transformative learning, and global competence. Although research in these areas has grown considerably, connections between science education and global learning are often fragmented, and further work is needed to clarify how science education can integrate these perspectives in coherent and effective ways. The Research Topic therefore seeks contributions that examine how learners and educators engage with sustainability-related topics, how teaching and learning processes can foster critical reflection and perspective-taking, and how educational settings can support the development of global competence. By bringing together these research perspectives, this collection aims to strengthen conceptual frameworks and provide practical implications for advancing science education that empowers learners to contribute to a more sustainable and globally responsible future. This Research Topic welcomes contributions that explore ways of embedding science education within global learning to promote sustainability, transformative learning and global competence. We invite empirical studies, theoretical analyses, literature reviews, and practical examples that provide conceptual or evidence-based insights into how science education can contribute to these aims.Submissions may, for example, focus on:- engaging learners and educators with global and sustainable topics- fostering critical reflection, perspective-taking, and transformative learning processes- linking scientific understanding and attitudes towards science with societal and environmental responsibility- developing scientifically informed global competence in different educational contexts- designing and evaluating teaching and learning approaches that promote sustainability-oriented action- integrating global learning principles into science curricula and teacher educationPlease submit a manuscript summary of up to 500 words before the 31st of August before submitting your full manuscript.
