Secondary Stroke Prevention: Emerging Insights into Risk Prediction, Recurrence, and Outcomes
Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, with secondary prevention posing a major clinical and societal challenge. While primary prevention strategies have significantly reduced incidence rates, recurrent strokes continue to contribute disproportionately to mortality and long-term morbidity. Current research emphasizes well-established risk factors—such as hypertension, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, smoking, and physical inactivity—yet uncertainties persist regarding how these variables interact and evolve across patient subgroups and diverse populations. Recent investigations have expanded this scope, identifying immunologic, metabolic, and genetic contributors as emerging determinants of recurrence and outcomes. However, inconsistencies in methodology, underrepresentation of non-Western cohorts, and fragmented integration of novel biomarkers into risk models leave essential gaps in predictive precision and preventive efficacy. This Research Topic aims to integrate novel insights from clinical and translational research to enhance the prediction, prevention, and management of recurrent stroke. The main goal is to refine risk stratification tools through a multidimensional approach that combines clinical, biological, and behavioral indicators. By bridging findings from neurological sciences, cardiovascular medicine, and computational modeling, this initiative seeks to illuminate mechanistic pathways, test preventive interventions, and evaluate real-world outcomes to guide more personalized, population-adapted prevention strategies. The ultimate objective is to translate evidence into practice, optimizing long-term recovery and reducing the global burden of recurrent cerebrovascular disease. To gather further insights into the evolving landscape of secondary stroke prevention, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Innovative risk prediction models integrating clinical and molecular datao Role of immune and inflammatory responses in stroke recurrenceo Effects of comorbidities, aging, and lifestyle factors on long-term outcomeso Precision medicine and the use of biomarkers in personalized preventiono Advances in pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and interventional therapies in secondary prevention (including carotid stenting, PFO closure, and intracranial therapies)o Use of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data in risk assessmento Global disparities and implementation challenges in secondary preventiono Longitudinal studies evaluating functional and cognitive outcomes post-stroke Topic editors: Mirjam R Heldner, Zhe Kang Law, Linxin Li, Radhika Lotlikar, Marieta Peycheva, Faddi Ghassan Saleh Velez Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84112/secondary-stroke-prevention-emerging-insights-into-risk-prediction-recurrence-and-outcomes
