Secure Operation and Control of Renewable-Rich Power Systems

The transition toward renewable-rich power systems is fundamentally reshaping both power–energy balancing and system security. The traditional paradigm—where controllable generation follows demand—is being replaced by a more complex framework characterized by the temporal and spatial variability of renewable energy and increasingly dynamic load profiles. This evolution requires enhanced coordination of flexible resources, inter-regional power exchange, and advanced balancing mechanisms. At the same time, the rapid growth of inverter-based resources is reducing system inertia, accelerating system dynamics, and introducing new stability and security challenges. As a result, power and energy balancing can no longer be treated independently of system security; instead, they are becoming tightly coupled across both scheduling and real-time operation. In practice, maintaining secure and efficient operation in renewable-rich power systems presents several key challenges. Market-based dispatch and scheduling may achieve economic optimality but fail to ensure sufficient ramping capability, transfer margins, or disturbance-response readiness. Cross-regional balancing improves resource allocation but can increase stress on transmission corridors and reduce dynamic security margins. Moreover, under low-inertia and weak-grid conditions, operating points that are acceptable from a steady-state perspective may still lead to frequency instability, voltage collapse, or poorly damped oscillations. Addressing these issues requires coordinated strategies that integrate balancing and security considerations across multiple timescales and system layers, including generation, grid, load, and storage.Recent advances in grid-forming control, wide-area measurement systems, real-time security assessment, and data-driven operational support are enabling new approaches to managing these complexities. This Research Topic aims to bring together innovative research on the secure operation and control of renewable-rich power systems, with a focus on methodologies that jointly address power–energy balance and system security in modern grids. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Mini-Reviews, and Perspectives addressing theoretical, methodological, and applied aspects of renewable-rich power system operation and control. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Power and energy balancing in renewable-rich power systems;• Market-based balancing and ancillary service coordination;• Stability analysis and security assessment under low-inertia conditions;• Fast control and real-time dispatch in weak-grid environments;• Coordinated operation of generation, grid, load, and storage resources;• Control of power electronic converters and inverter-based resources;• Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and HVDC control strategies;• AI and data-driven methods for power system operation and control.Submissions that demonstrate scalable solutions, real-world applications, and cross-timescale coordination strategies are particularly encouraged.
