Self-Assembling Nanosystems with Antimicrobial Activity

The field of self-assembling nanosystems has been a focal point of research since the 1990s, primarily due to their unique ability to spontaneously organize into structured assemblies with minimal energy configurations. Early studies sought to unravel the underlying principles behind their self-organization and their resultant chemical and physical properties. Over time, research efforts reversed the paradigm, designing structures based on desired chemical-physical attributes. Modern applications of these nanosystems are broad, encompassing targeted drug delivery particles, tissue engineering materials, regenerative medicine, vaccine delivery systems, antimicrobial coatings, and biosensors. Despite the significant progress in these areas, the development of self-assembling nanosystems specifically tailored for antimicrobial applications remains an evolving frontier. This Research Topic aims to consolidate knowledge on self-assembling nanosystems endowed with antimicrobial properties, which present innovative solutions to counteract resistant pathogens. By harnessing their prowess in precise and controlled molecular assembly, these nanosystems promise to revolutionize antimicrobial strategies, potentially leading to paradigm shifts in microbial control and therapeutic interventions. To gather further insights into this cutting-edge domain of self-assembling nanosystems for antimicrobial objectives, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:&#8226 Mechanisms and principles of self-assembly in nanosystems&#8226 Design and synthesis of effective antimicrobial nanostructures&#8226 Application of nanosystems in combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria&#8226 Innovations in the targeted delivery and controlled release of antimicrobials&#8226 Comparative studies on the efficacy and safety of 'nanomicrobials'We invite varied article types to provide a comprehensive overview of current advancements and promising directions in the field.
