Sensor-Enabled Pathological and Therapeutic Analysis of the Gut-Microbiota–Organ Axis in Metabolic-Related Diseases

The human gut microbiota plays a crucial role in regulating systemic metabolism, immunity, and organ function. Increasing evidence demonstrates that metabolic-related diseases, including obesity, diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and metabolic syndrome, are not confined to single-organ dysfunction but rather emerge from complex interactions within the gut-microbiota–organ axis. Communication routes such as the gut–brain, gut–liver, gut–kidney, and gut–vascular pathways mediate the effects of microbial metabolites, immune signaling, and barrier function on distant organs, shaping both health and disease trajectories. While multi-omics approaches have provided deep insights into microbial composition and functional potential, they often capture only static snapshots of these dynamic processes. The integration of real-time monitoring technologies—such as wearable and ingestible sensors—offers unprecedented opportunities to map physiological, metabolic, and microbial dynamics in vivo. However, systematic frameworks linking sensor-derived data with microbiome and pathological evidence remain limited, challenging our capacity to translate these data into actionable understanding for disease prevention and treatment optimization. This Research Topic aims to foster multidisciplinary studies that connect the gut-microbiota–organ axis with the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy of metabolic-related diseases. We seek to uncover temporal and causal relationships between microbial dysbiosis, host organ dysfunction, and therapeutic response. Specific attention is given to the transformation of raw sensor signals into interpretable biological phenotypes through advanced signal processing, multimodal data fusion, and artificial intelligence. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Mechanisms underlying gut-microbiota–organ axis interactions in metabolic diseases and related complicationso Microbiome and metabolome changes revealed by metagenomics, metabolomics, germ-free or gnotobiotic models, and microbiota transplantso Sensor-based approaches (wearable, ingestible, or implantable) for monitoring physiological, behavioral, biochemical, or gastrointestinal parameterso Signal processing, quality control, feature extraction, and multimodal data integration methods for sensor and omics datao Artificial-intelligence-assisted analysis for pathological classification, phenotype prediction, and therapeutic-response assessmento Mechanistic studies and translational applications of Traditional Chinese Medicine, probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and functional foods targeting microbiotao Computational, imaging, and clinical-validation studies linking microbiota dynamics to disease progression and treatment outcomes Topic editors: Wenzhi Hao, Tiancheng Cao, Jin Wang Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81897/sensor-enabled-pathological-and-therapeutic-analysis-of-the-gut-microbiota-organ-axis-in-metabolic-related-diseases
