Sex Differences in Schizophrenia : Mechanisms, Trajectories, and Treatment Implications
While sex differences in the presentation, prognosis and treatment of schizophrenia have been recognized for decades, there continues to be a gap in research further elucidating how sex influences the clinical presentation, neurobiology, response to treatment and prognosis of early psychosis and schizophrenia in general. Despite the rates of schizophrenia being roughly equal in males and females, research studies in psychotic disorders are frequently disproportionately male, further contributing to the knowledge gap. This Research Topic therefore aims to explore sex differences in the onset, presentation, neurobiology, treatment, and prognosis of schizophrenia. By exploring sex-based differences in multiple domains of schizophrenia, this collection will advance our understanding of schizophrenia in females, which will have implications in diagnosis, treatment, and optimizing outcomes for women with schizophrenia. To gather further insights in this area, we welcome contributions including, but not limited to, the following themes: - Sex differences in diagnostic trajectories, including misdiagnosis of females with other non-psychotic disorders- Impact of co-occurring mood, anxiety, trauma, and personality disorders on diagnosis and treatment in females- Sex differences in symptom profiles, cognitive function, and functional outcomes- Neurobiological mechanisms underlying sex differences, including neuroimaging, genetics, and neurochemistry- Pharmacological treatment responses and side-effect profiles across sexes- Psychosocial and environmental factors differentially affecting males and females- Sex-specific predictors of treatment resistance or recovery- Gender-based efficacy of psychological treatments in psychotic disordersWe welcome original research, systematic reviews, clinical studies and perspective articles examining sex-based differences in early psychosis and/or schizophrenia.
