Six Years On: Ethical, Legal, and Social Reflections on National, Global, and Scientific Responses to Pandemics
Six years after the world was reshaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, critical ethical, legal, and social questions remain regarding how societies responded and how they should prepare for the next major global health crisis. This Research Topic seeks to assess national and international responses, scientific decision-making, and the broader socio-political dynamics that influenced public health outcomes. By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from bioethics, law, public health, data science, sociology, and governance studies, we aim to distill what the global community has learned from this defining event. In alignment with the scope of Frontiers in Genetics, this collection focuses especially on the role of genetic and genomic tools in pandemic response — from pathogen and host genomics to large-scale genomic surveillance — and on the ethical, legal, and social implications of producing, sharing, and governing these data.Key themes include, but are not limited to· The ethics of emergency powers and public health restrictions· Inequities in access to vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics· Transparency and trust in scientific communication· Data governance and privacy trade-offs in digital surveillance systems· The global failure to equitably operationalize pandemic preparedness frameworks· The role of misinformation and societal polarizationContributions will analyze both successes and shortcomings, including rapid vaccine development, the mobilization of scientific collaboration, and persistent structural barriers that undermined response efforts.Ultimately, this collection asks: What lessons must be preserved for the next pandemic? We invite authors to identify durable principles for future preparedness, such as;· resilient public health infrastructure,· equitable global governance mechanisms,· ethically grounded data-sharing structures,· inclusive communication strategies,· frameworks that balance individual rights with collective welfareThe goal is to create a forward-looking, evidence-based, and ethically robust roadmap for navigating future biological threats.
