Small molecule immunomodulator or immunotherapy potentiators in cancer therapy
Immunotherapy for cancer treatment has seen unprecedented advancements in recent years. However, all current immunotherapies are based on biological molecules. There are reports showing that small molecules can also have immunotherapeutic potential or have the ability to potentiate the efficacy of existing biological immunotherapy. While currently no small molecule immunotherapy has made it to the FDA approval yet, many small molecules are currently under investigation as promising immunotherapy or immunotherapy potentiators. This research topic will focus on such small molecules in immunotherapy and provide readers with timely and current research progress in this very active field.Unlike antibodies and other biological-based immunotherapy, small molecules generally are less specific to the intended drug target, however, they have the advantages over antibodies, including easier tissue penetration, oral availability, and the ability to reach intracellular targets. This research topic will focus on the recent advancements in small molecule immunotherapy or immunopotentiation in cancer research. We welcome submissions in the form of original research articles or reviews, which cover, but are not limited to, the following themes:• New drug target(s) for small molecules to exert immunotherapeutic efficacy or immunotherapy potentiation• Discovery and development of small-molecule immunotherapy• Discovery and development of small-molecule immunomodulator or immunopotentiator• Rational drug combinations enhancing immune responsesPlease note that manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases which are not accompanied by robust and relevant validation (clinical cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) are out of scope for this Research Topic. Please also note that Professor Wei Li is founder and CSO of SEAK Therapeutics, LLC.
