Smart and Sustainable Food Packaging Innovations

The growing global demand for safer, longer shelf life, and environmentally friendly food products has accelerated innovations in food packaging. Conventional packaging materials often contribute to environmental pollution and may be insufficient in preventing microbial spoilage. Smart and sustainable packaging addresses these challenges by combining microbiological safety with eco-friendly materials, integrating technologies such as biodegradable polymers, nanomaterials, active agents, and sensor-based monitoring systems. These advancements not only enhance shelf-life and maintain product quality but also help reduce food waste and environmental impact.Application of bioresources for the development of smart packaging materials offers a sustainable, circular, and cost-effective strategy aligned with modern bioeconomy principles. This collection aims to bring together high-quality contributions from researchers working on the development, characterization, and application of innovative, sustainable, and circular food smart packaging. We welcome Original Research and Review manuscripts that explore the latest advancements in all types of smart (both active and intelligent) packaging materials and novel bio-based sources for the development of innovative sensor technologies. Contributions that integrate microbiology, material science, and food technology, particularly those addressing sustainability challenges, environmental impacts, regulatory considerations, and microbiological monitoring tools in packaging, are strongly encouraged.Frontiers in Food Science and Technology welcomes submissions related to innovative packaging solutions that integrate microbial safety, active and intelligent technologies, and sustainable materials. Topics may include:• Development of both active and intelligent key elements from sustainable sources• Application of sustainable smart materials for food shelf-life extension• Application of sustainable smart materials for food spoilage monitoring• Bio-based polymers and biodegradable films• Bio-based functional materials for developing smart packaging• Nanomaterials for food smart packaging• Biosensors and spoilage detection Topic editors: Mehran Moradi, Jun Liu Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/75604/smart-and-sustainable-food-packaging-innovations
