Smart nanocarriers and biomaterials: Transformative strategies for advanced drug delivery

Nanobiotechnology is experiencing rapid growth, offering transformative breakthroughs in the design of drug delivery systems. Smart nanocarriers and advanced biomaterials have emerged as key players in overcoming persistent challenges in therapeutic delivery—from improving drug solubility and stability to achieving precise spatial and temporal control over drug release. The current research landscape highlights a surge in innovative nanomaterials that dynamically respond to biological signals, microenvironments, or external stimuli, thereby enhancing treatment efficacy and safety. Major studies have demonstrated significant benefits in numerous therapeutic areas, including oncology, infectious diseases, inflammation, and regenerative medicine. Despite remarkable progress, pressing questions remain regarding the scalability, cost-effectiveness, reproducibility, patient-specific performance, and long-term safety of these systems. Addressing these gaps is critical for translating promising concepts into real-world clinical solutions. This Research Topic aims to bring together recent advances, conceptual innovations, and comprehensive reviews related to smart nanocarriers and biomaterials for advanced drug delivery. Our objective is to showcase a broad spectrum of strategies—including design, functionalization, application, mechanistic insights, and translational aspects—that push the boundaries of current knowledge. By creating an inclusive platform, we seek to encourage cross-disciplinary contributions from researchers in academia, industry, and clinical domains, fueling collaboration and inspiring new ideas. The scope of this Research Topic is intentionally broad, encompassing all aspects of intelligent nanocarriers and biomaterials that contribute to improved drug delivery solutions, while remaining grounded in nanomedicine and nanobiotechnology. We welcome submissions that focus on new materials, delivery mechanisms, therapeutic targets, or assessment of performance, provided they advance understanding or application of smart nanodelivery. To gather further insights in this vibrant field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Development and characterization of smart, stimuli-responsive, or programmable nanocarriers- Innovations in nanobiomaterials for enhanced bioavailability and targeted delivery- Multifunctional and combination delivery systems- Applications in various disease contexts, including oncology, infectious diseases, metabolic and neurological disorders- Mechanistic studies of nanocarrier–biological interactions and biodistribution- Assessments of safety, immunogenicity, and toxicity- Clinical translation, regulatory considerations, and emerging challenges Topic editors: Amarjitsing Rajput, Zhengwei Huang, Rabinarayan Parhi Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79740/smart-nanocarriers-and-biomaterials-transformative-strategies-for-advanced-drug-delivery
