Smart Physiological Monitoring: Innovations In Emerging Sensors And Real-Time Applications

The field of physiological monitoring is undergoing a significant transformation, fueled by rapid advances in sensor technologies and digital health solutions. Traditional approaches for tracking vital signs—while foundational—often struggle with discomfort, lack of real-time feedback, and limited adaptability outside clinical environments. Recent progress in non-invasive, wearable, and ambient sensor systems has opened new horizons for continuous and seamless tracking of physiological parameters, such as heart rate, respiration, temperature, and more. These developments are driving a paradigm shift towards connected health, enabling earlier diagnosis, tailored interventions, and remote patient management. However, challenges remain, including ensuring data accuracy, user comfort, and effective integration with clinical workflows, while privacy and interoperability continue to be active topics of debate. This Research Topic aims to advance the field by bringing together pioneering work on smart physiological monitoring with a focus on innovative sensing technologies and their practical applications. The primary goal is to encourage integrative, interdisciplinary research that unites engineering, physiology, data analytics, and clinical medicine. We seek submissions that develop or assess novel sensors, demonstrate system integration across hardware and software, or employ advanced data analysis techniques—including artificial intelligence and machine learning—to interpret physiological signals. Contributions that reveal translational potential, validate clinical utility, or enhance user experience are particularly encouraged, as they address bridging the gap between technical development and real-world healthcare impact. The scope of this Research Topic centers on the development and application of emerging sensors for smart monitoring of human physiology, with particular interest in translational and interdisciplinary approaches. It does not cover invasive sensor techniques or animal-based studies. To gather further insights into this rapidly evolving area, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Wearable and non-invasive sensor platforms for vital sign measuremento Multimodal and hybrid sensing approaches for enhanced physiological insightso Signal processing and data fusion techniques for physiological data integrationo AI-driven interpretation and predictive analytics for health monitoringo IoT-enabled architectures for remote and continuous physiological surveillanceo Clinical, home, and community applications of smart physiological monitoringo User-centric design, privacy, interoperability, and implementation challenges Topic editors: Weimin LYU, Hanqing Guo, Haihua Shu, Ketan Chu Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76685/smart-physiological-monitoring-innovations-in-emerging-sensors-and-real-time-applications
