Social and Scientific Approaches to Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents one of the most urgent global health threats of the 21st century, projected to cause up to 10 million deaths annually by 2050 if current trends continue. Driven by the overuse and misuse of antimicrobials in human medicine, agriculture, and the environment, AMR undermines modern medicine and threatens to reverse decades of progress in infection control and public health. This Research Topic aims to advance our understanding of AMR by integrating social and scientific perspectives. We welcome contributions exploring both the technical and biological dimensions — such as novel antimicrobial development, resistance mechanisms, surveillance technologies, and diagnostic innovations — as well as social, behavioral, economic, and policy dimensions, including antibiotic stewardship, public awareness, regulatory frameworks, and socio-cultural factors influencing antimicrobial use. Particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary and One Health approaches that bridge human, animal, and environmental health. This collection seeks high-quality original research, reviews, perspectives, and policy analyses that provide actionable insights for policymakers, clinicians, researchers, and communities. By fostering dialogue between social and scientific communities, this Research Topic aims to support holistic, effective strategies to tackle AMR at local, national, and global scales. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:-Novel antimicrobial development and resistance mechanisms-Surveillance technologies and diagnostic innovations-Antibiotic stewardship programs and healthcare practices-Regulatory frameworks and policy analysis-Socio-cultural and behavioral determinants of antimicrobial use-Equity and social determinants of health in AMR contexts-One Health approaches bridging human, animal, and environmental health-Behavioral interventions to promote sustainable antimicrobial use Topic editors: Rodolfo García-Contreras, Corina-Diana Ceapă, Gabriela Olmedo-Alvarez, Karina Tuz Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81002/social-and-scientific-approaches-to-tackling-antimicrobial-resistance
