Social Determinants, Digital Health and Aging: Bridging Equity Gaps in Epidemiological Research

Aging populations worldwide face complex health challenges influenced by socioeconomic status, social support, and access to healthcare. The digital transformation of health services offers new opportunities but also risks exacerbating existing disparities, particularly among older adults in low-resource settings. Understanding how social determinants intersect with digital health access is critical for designing equitable public health interventions. This Research Topic aims to explore these intersections through an epidemiological lens, addressing gaps in research on aging, technology, and health equity across diverse global contexts. This Research Topic seeks to synthesize cutting-edge research on how social determinants of health and digital health literacy influence physical, cognitive, and mental health outcomes in aging populations. We aim to address the problem of health inequities exacerbated by socioeconomic factors and the digital divide. Recent advances in digital health, big data, and social epidemiology provide new tools to investigate these relationships. Our goal is to compile multidisciplinary studies that propose actionable strategies for policymakers, healthcare providers, and researchers to promote healthy aging and reduce disparities. We encourage submissions that leverage novel methodologies, including longitudinal designs, mixed-methods approaches, and cross-national comparisons.
