Sonodynamic biomimetic nanomedicine: Next-generation strategies for precision cancer therapy

Nanobiotechnology is driving new frontiers in precision oncology, with sonodynamic therapy (SDT) at the forefront as a minimally invasive technique exploiting the interplay between ultrasound energy and molecular sonosensitizers to elicit potent anti-tumor effects. Yet, the clinical translation of SDT faces persistent challenges, including the obstacles posed by the tumor microenvironment, suboptimal biodistribution, and risks of off-target cytotoxicity. The recent convergence of SDT with biomimetic-nanomedicine—leveraging nature-inspired nanoparticles or cell-membrane-coated nanocarriers—has sparked the emergence of sonodynamic biomimetic-nanomedicine (SBNM). This approach holds the promise of refined tumor targeting, improved biocompatibility, and the capacity to navigate biological barriers more effectively than conventional therapeutics. In parallel, the integration of transition metal complexes into nanomedicine formulations has garnered attention for high-yield reactive oxygen species generation, which is crucial for efficient tumor ablation. This Research Topic aims to accelerate the development and translational potential of SBNM for enhanced cancer therapy. Specifically, it seeks to capture the latest advances in the engineering of biomimetic nanocarriers, the rational design and discovery of novel sonosensitizers including transition metal-based agents, and the mechanistic insights into tumor cell eradication under ultrasound activation. The collection also encourages research that explores SBNM in combination with other modalities—such as immunotherapy, chemotherapy, or photodynamic therapy—to overcome tumor resistance mechanisms and optimize therapeutic outcomes. To gather further insights in clinically relevant, nanoscale innovations for cancer therapy, this Research Topic welcomes multidisciplinary contributions centered on the nanobiotechnological aspects of sonodynamic and biomimetic strategies. Submissions must focus on nanoengineered materials, biomimetic system integration, or nanoscale mechanisms underpinning enhanced therapeutic efficacy, while excluding topics outside the biomedical nanotechnology domain. We invite articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Engineering and characterization of biomimetic nanocarriers for SDT- Development and optimization of transition metal complex sonosensitizers- Mechanistic elucidation of ultrasound-induced tumor cell death at the nanoscale- Overcoming tumor microenvironment barriers through nanobiotechnology- Integration of SBNM with multimodal cancer therapies- In vivo performance, biocompatibility, and nanotoxicity assessments- Translational and regulatory perspectives for clinical development Topic editors: Praveen Kumar Panangattukara Prabhakaran, Hoang Quan Truong, Cao Thuy Giang Nguyen Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78475/sonodynamic-biomimetic-nanomedicine-next-generation-strategies-for-precision-cancer-therapy
