Spotlight on Catalonia: Nanotechnology Research
We are delighted to present the Research Topic, Spotlight on Nanotechnology Research: Catalonia.Led by a team of expert editors including Dr. Jordi Díaz-Marcos (Universitat de Barcelona) and Dr. Christoffer Åberg (University of Groningen), this article collection aims to showcase the latest advancements in nanotechnology and nanoscience research in Catalonia.Over the past two decades, Catalonia has emerged as a leading international hub in nanoscience and nanotechnology, driven by a strong ecosystem of universities, research institutes, technology centers, and innovation infrastructures. This coordinated investment in scientific excellence has enabled significant advances in areas such as nanomedicine, nanobio-interactions, photonics, advanced nanomaterials, and nanoelectronics, while also fostering emerging domains including quantum technologies and sustainable energy solutions.Beyond scientific breakthroughs, the Catalan nanotechnology community has also promoted cross-cutting dimensions such as education, outreach, responsible research and innovation, and ethical reflection on emerging technologies. These initiatives have helped connect cutting-edge research with society, strengthening the role of nanotechnology in addressing global challenges. This Research Topic aims to showcase the breadth, quality, and impact of nanotechnology research conducted in Catalonia, highlighting contributions from leading laboratories and interdisciplinary collaborations, including works addressing societal challenges such as health, energy transition, environmental sustainability, and digital transformation, as well as to the increasing role of artificial intelligence and data-driven approaches in nanoscience and nanotechnology. By bringing together these contributions, the collection seeks to provide an overview of a vibrant regional ecosystem with global scientific influence.Contributions may cover areas including nanobiomedicine, photonics, nanoelectronics, quantum nanoscience, nanomaterials for energy and sustainability, environmental nanotechnology, and emerging AI-driven approaches in nanoscience. The Topic also welcomes perspectives addressing responsible innovation, education, and science communication within the nanotechnology ecosystem.Participation is by invitation only, and corresponding authors must be affiliated with a research institution based in Catalonia. We welcome submissions in the form of Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective articles, presenting significant scientific advances, emerging directions, or integrative overviews of the field. Contributions should highlight both scientific excellence and the collaborative research environment that characterizes nanotechnology development in the region.
