Stress on the Heart: Emerging Imaging and Autonomic Signatures of the Neuro-Cardiac Axis

Emotional, hemodynamic, and environmental stressors converge on the heart in ways that are only now becoming visible. From the “Triple S” (stress septal sign) and segmental myocardial remodeling to stress-induced cardiomyopathies such as Takotsubo syndrome, a growing body of evidence points to a shared neuro-cardiac axis linking brain-driven stress signals to structural and functional cardiac change. Understanding this axis — and catching its earliest imaging, biomarker, and autonomic signatures — is becoming a critical frontier in precision cardiology. This Research Topic welcomes contributions exploring early diagnostic signatures across the full spectrum of stress-mediated cardiac vulnerability: stress-induced septal changes (“Triple S”), segmental myocardial remodeling, Takotsubo and other stress cardiomyopathies, and the neuro-endocrine and autonomic pathways linking emotional and physical stress to cardiac outcomes. Studies addressing sex and gender differences in stress responses, AI-enhanced imaging and prediction models, wearable/autonomic (HRV) monitoring, and interventions to prevent or reverse maladaptive remodeling are particularly encouraged. For this Research Topic, we encourage the submission of original research, reviews, clinical case studies, case reports, mini reviews, and perspectives addressing (but not limited to):-Novel biomarkers and imaging techniques for stress assessment in neuro-cardiology-Mechanisms and significance of segmental myocardial remodeling-Takotsubo syndrome and other stress-induced cardiomyopathies: mechanisms, imaging, and outcomes-Autonomic and neuro-endocrine pathways linking stress to cardiac vulnerability-Strategies for early identification and intervention in patients with multiple cardiac stressors-Impacts of psychological, hemodynamic, and environmental stress on cardiac adaptation-Preclinical and translational approaches to manage superposed stressors-AI-enhanced and wearable-based diagnostic frameworks for personalized neuro-cardiologic care-Sex and gender differences in neuro-cardiology, stress response, biomarkers, remodeling, and clinical outcomes Topic editors: Fatih YALÇIN, Mario Garcia Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84896/stress-on-the-heart-emerging-imaging-and-autonomic-signatures-of-the-neuro-cardiac-axis
