Structural Design of Porous Frameworks for Selective Separation and Extraction
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous materials whose structural features can be tailored through the selection of metal nodes, organic linkers, covalent connectivity, pore architecture and functional groups. Their tunable structures and chemical properties make them attractive platforms for separation and extraction applications involving metal ions, organic compounds and other target analytes.MOFs, COFs and MOF–COF hybrid materials offer complementary approaches to the design of porous frameworks with controlled adsorption, binding and transport properties. However, the relationship between framework structure and separation performance remains highly material-dependent. In particular, the influence of functional groups, pore environments, framework stability and host–guest interactions on selectivity, capacity and reusability requires further investigation in complex samples. This Research Topic explores the structural design, synthesis and functionalization of porous frameworks, including MOFs, COFs and MOF–COF hybrids, for selective separation and extraction. We welcome studies involving metal ions and organic compounds, including separation and extraction methods such as dispersive solid-phase extraction and microextraction. The Topic will focus on work that relates framework structure, including node chemistry, linker functionalization, covalent connectivity, pore architecture and defect engineering, to separation performance. Applications in environmental and other complex matrices are welcome, provided that the material design and separation mechanism are clearly addressed. Reviews consolidating recent advances in the design of porous frameworks for separation and extraction are also encouraged. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles on themes including, but not limited to:• Structural design, synthesis and functionalization of MOFs, COFs and MOF–COF hybrid materials for selective separation and extraction• Structure–property and structure–selectivity relationships in porous framework materials• Separation and extraction of metal ions, organic compounds and other target analytes• Dispersive solid-phase extraction, microextraction and related separation methods using porous frameworks• Influence of pore architecture, functional groups, node chemistry and host–guest interactions on separation performance• Hydrolytic and chemical stability, metal leaching, regeneration and reusability• Framework-based materials for separation in environmental and other complex matrices• Comparative evaluation of porous frameworks against established separation and extraction materialsTopic Editor Selcuk Demir holds national patents on applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).
