Supercapacitors and Hybrid Electrochemical Cells: Advanced Materials, Architectures, and Emerging Applications

The ongoing pursuit of sustainable energy solutions has accelerated the convergence of multiple energy storage and conversion technologies, driving rapid innovation in hybrid electrochemical cells—devices that combine the strengths of supercapacitors, batteries, and other novel storage technologies. Moving beyond traditional electric double-layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors, the field now encompasses hybrid systems such as lithium-ion capacitors, battery–capacitor composites, and multifunctional energy storage units tailored for next-generation power electronics, grid integration, and compact, portable devices. This research topic aims to showcase breakthroughs at the interface of supercapacitor science and hybrid electrochemical systems, with a distinct emphasis on: • Emerging materials (e.g., metal-organic frameworks, MXenes, chalcogenides, redox-active polymers), • Integrated and hierarchical device architectures (beyond conventional planar or coin cells), • Multimodal or hybrid energy storage designs (integrating faradaic and non-faradaic mechanisms, photo-enhanced capacitance, etc.), • Coupling with renewable energy harvesters, microgrids, wearables, biomedical devices, and autonomous sensors, • New paradigms for safety, reliability, scalability, and sustainable fabrication. Submissions bridging research on hybrid electrochemical cells—including battery-supercapacitor hybrids, metal-ion capacitors, asymmetric and symmetric designs—and those pioneering emerging applications such as self-powered systems, soft robotics, biomedical devices, smart textiles, and advanced IoT integration, are particularly encouraged.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • Next-generation composite and hybrid electrodes for multi-modal energy storage, • Advanced solid-state and gel electrolytes for hybrid cells, • Flexible, stretchable, and shape-adaptive devices (e.g., for e-skin and implantables), • Integration strategies for battery–supercapacitor hybrid systems, • Photo-, electro-, or photoelectrochemical hybrid devices (e.g., solar-charging supercapacitors), • Hybrid energy harvesting and storage approaches, • Green chemistry, safety, and scalability in device design, • Interface engineering for power electronics, wireless charging, or microgrid connectivity, • In situ characterization and diagnostics for hybrid operation. Original research articles, reviews, perspectives, and communications that advance the understanding or application of supercapacitors and hybrid electrochemical cells in advanced and unconventional scenarios are welcomed for this research topic. All submissions will be peer-reviewed in accordance with the journal’s standards.
